According to the governmental institution Dominican Free Zone, 22 electronic companies currently operate within the Free Zones platform, generating over 11,500 direct jobs, with a total investment of $120 million USD. The electrical products and components manufacturing sector experienced significant growth in 2018, reaching $1,150 million USD in exports, marking a 17% increase from the previous year. These companies exhibit diverse capabilities, spanning from intermediate component production to final product assembly, encompassing contract manufacturers and globally renowned brands, including Fortune 500 companies.
Additionally, there has been a recent emergence of automotive components concentration within the zones, allowing companies to streamline their final line assemblies closer to the market while capitalizing on tariff preferences and tax structures. Given the presence of crucial inputs and raw materials such as electronics, plastics, and leather—established sectors in the Free Zones—opportunities abound for the automotive subsector's manufacturing in the Dominican Republic.
